Living without TV...
Today I would like to focus on the happiness derived from a life without TV...
Well, first of all I must explain my current situation: my husband went to live here in Cambridge on March 2nd 2009, for his job, and in that precise date (actually, at that time we were still engaged) I began to commute once a month between Italy (where I lived and worked) and England. It was a very stressing life, I had only short periods of about 1 or 2 months in which I permanently stayed in Cambridge and then just commutation and lots of plains every months... Also, I hated fly! And I still don't love it...
But on last June we married and I finally established here in Cambridge too.
When we arrived for the first time, we chose a nice flat, in which we are living already, but as we didn't know how long we would stay in the flat, we decided to not buy a TV: we thought internet would have been perfect for everything we would need! Moreover, we had a lot of dvd movies.
Now it's about 5 months we live in the complete absence of TV.... and I can confirm it's great! First of all, we are compelled to read on-line newspaper for political information and actuality, and reading many newspapers surely help in getting a more complete and objective information. Which is always advisable. Then, we avoid idiot TV programmes like reality shows, talk shows, quiz shows etc and we have more time for reading books (I mean "real" paper books, not e-books: I like the scent of sheets!) or write a diary or, in the case of my husband, playing chess or piano!
And I feel better: I'm conscious that my brain is getting benefits from this situation, I feel it working and thinking more then before and, consequently, I'm finding new interests in the world around. This is really like a new life and in my opinion everyone should try!
At the very beginning I thought that living without a TV would have been boring but now I know it was the right choice.
Probably, in the future we'll have a TV, but I'm strongly motivated to try to switch it on as little as possible. And of course I would like my children did the same....
